MACRO PRAGMATIC STUDY IN THE NOVEL KEMBALIKAN BY RIE HANDRA J.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the macro-pragmatic aspects found in the novel Kembalikan by Rie Handra J. through an analysis of narrative discourse structure, politeness strategies, and critical macro-pragmatics. The research employed a qualitative approach using content analysis as its research design. The data source was the novel Kembalikan, while the research data consisted of narrative passages and characters’ utterances relevant to the focus of the study. Data were collected through reading, observation, and note-taking techniques. The analysis was conducted by integrating William Labov’s narrative structure theory, Brown and Levinson’s politeness strategies, and Al-Hindawi’s critical macro-pragmatic perspective. The findings reveal that the macro-pragmatic construction of the novel emerges from the interplay between narrative discourse structure, politeness strategies, and ideological representation throughout the story. The narrative structure is predominantly characterized by the complication stage, which serves to develop and intensify the conflict. The politeness strategies identified include bald-on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, off-record strategies, and face-threatening acts (FTA). In addition, the critical macro-pragmatic analysis indicates the presence of ideological representations related to trauma, fear, and the pursuit of justice, which are conveyed through linguistic choices and narrative construction. These findings suggest that language in the novel functions not only as a means of communication but also as a medium for constructing meaning and representing ideology within the narrative discourse.
